Japan

Japan has a large gradient of natural and social characteristics in the critical zone under a wide range of climatic and geological settings. Our focus is on soil and water sustainability in landscapes undergoing transitions (land abandonment) and the perceived effects of such transitions on ecosystem services and disservices with input from stakeholders. Actual effects will consider the water, nutrient and biogeochemical cycles under changing land management at various research sites in Japan. The team will take advantage of the availability of long-term datasets (e.g., water flows and nutrient concentration/discharge) from watersheds to assess transitions in the critical zone. Perceived effects will consider stakeholder expectation, preference and evaluation of ecosystem services and disservices. More specifically, the ABRESO Japan team will analyze the impact of less forest management and farmland abandonment on the environmental quality of soil and water at various research sites including forest, farmland, paddy field and wetland landscapes across Japan.

These research sites are shown in the Figure 1 below. They include a wide range of climate, geology, land-use and land-cover, land abandonment history and various human impacts. Long-term or intensive monitoring data for soil and water dynamics in critical zone of those sites are available for the ABRESO project. The number of research sites of ABRESO Japan are increasing to address national and international research questions.

ABRESO field sitemap in Japan (June 27, 2022)
Figure 1: Map of ABRESO research sites in Japan

About 68% of Japan’s entire land area is covered by mountainous forests (Figure 2), mostly in the upper part of the basin, while agricultural land and urban areas are distributed in the middle and lower parts of the basin. Climate is mainly based on the Asian monsoon system, with the northern region characterized by a subarctic climate and the southern region by a subtropical climate. The longitude of the natural conditions between north and south regions is large. Soils are strongly influenced by volcanic activity, but are formed from a variety of rock types, and peat soils are also present in the northern region. Hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the critical zone of Japan are strongly influenced by the above-mentioned topography, geology, and climate, which in turn are influenced by various human activities both spatially and temporally. There are various types of land use and land cover changing, such as land use change from forest to farmland, return to semi-natural ecosystem due to abandonment of farmland caused by depopulation and aging population, land use changes due to promotion of natural renewable energy use such as solar power, and land abandonment due to land use restriction caused by severe disasters such as huge earthquakes and tsunami. Those land use and cover changes will affect water and sediment transport and material cycling in the watershed in various ways. The goal of the ABRESO team of Japan is to elucidate the patterns and mechanisms of these changes.

Many of the study sites in Japan have been facing land abandonment including farmland (Figure 3), grassland (Figure 4), and forestland mainly due to depopulation, shrinkage of primary industry, and dependency on imported goods (e.g., food, timber, etc.).

In this study, we investigate various stakeholders’ perception regarding land use changes to explore sustainable land use management. In collaboration with the natural science team, we identify key stakeholders at each study site to understand their perception regarding the driver and impact of land use change, including impacts on various ecosystem services and disservices. We also aim to measure stakeholders’ preference of land management policies, and jointly develop multiple future scenarios up until 2050, using questionnaires, interviews and local workshops.

Integration of Traditional and Modern Bioproduction System for a Sustainable and Resilient Future under Climate and Ecosystem Changes (ITMoB)

Project summary:

ITMoB has been approved by the East Asia Joint Research Program (e-ASIA JRP). The e-Asia is a multilateral international joint initiative between several public funding organizations of the East Asia Summit (EAS) member countries.

The e-ASIA JRP works to formulate and support international joint research in the East Asian region on a multilateral basis for promoting researcher community exchange through workshops and other activities. The e-ASIA JRP aims to strengthen scientific and technological research and development capabilities towards resolving shared challenges across the East Asia region. These include challenges associated with materials, alternative energy, agriculture, health research, disaster risk reduction and management, advanced interdisciplinary research towards innovation, and environment.

As part of that objective, the e-ASIA JRP is intended to support collaborative research among three or more of its member countries. Through joint research among participating countries in agreed fields, it is the goal of the e-ASIA JRP to contribute to economic and human resource development, and to the resolution of various challenges in the region. The research projects are selected through open calls for proposals and subsequently supported by “Co-funding”. In response to the 9th Call for Proposals in the field of “Climate Change” on the topic of “Climate Change Impact on Natural and Human Systems”, ITMoB is among the selected four projects from total 33 proposal.
